KINGSPORT, Tenn. – A Gray, Tenn., man has been charged with attempted arson and theft over $1,000 following the Sunday evening burglary of a home in Kingsport, authorities said Monday.
Donnie Wayne Morgan, 24, is accused of breaking into a house at 236 Poplar Grove Road and stealing several items that police said he loaded into a pillowcase.
The home’s owner arrived on the scene as Morgan was leaving, according to a press release from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, and gave officers a description of both Morgan and the vehicle he was driving.
Officers pulled Morgan over after they said they saw him driving down on state Route 93 in Kingsport. They found the victim’s stolen property and some drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle and placed Morgan under arrest.
According to the release, the victim’s mother went inside the house after the burglary and heard the fire alarm buzzing. She found a basket in the kitchen that was on fire and threw it outside the home to prevent any damage.
Morgan was charged with simple possession, possession of burglary tools, attempt to commit arson, theft over $1,000, and aggravated burglary. He is currently being held in the Sullivan County Jail on a $26,000 bond.
